Is really good to tell the truth all the time?
Who has tried to tell always the truth? Is it plausible? Even when normal and daily questions are asked people lie, or they do not tell the truth: “How are you?” “I am well”, despite the possibility that people are not well at all, they omit that part because they do not want to deal with what comes next: the explanation… What would happen if, someday, you ask the famous question “How are you?” and the answer is “I am worse than ever”. Let’s face it; both implicated, the one who asks and the one who answers, do not want to confront a troublesome moment like that. The “truth telling” construct can be applied to every society in the world; that is why the story, being short, shocks the readers that much. Society says that honesty is a value that must not be lost, but, are people prepared to face the truth? |
From our childhood
Honesty is promoted since children are little babies as a value that must not be forgotten. It is supposed to be the centre of people's lives and they should flourish from it. But, what happens in real life? People are fired from their works, are set aside; people are punished for telling the truth. Honesty is a powerful weapon that few people dare to use. Telling the truth is much easier than inventing a lie. When the truth is revealed, no effort is made; it is just what you think. Instead, people tend to create a lie from nowhere in order to keep things as they are: peaceful, but untruthful. |
Telling the truth vs hurting people.
Is it possible to tell the truth without hurting others? That is the question to be answered. The majority of people are not prepared to receive the truth. Instead, people prefer to listen to what they want to listen, even when it is a total lie.
In the story, for example, the headmaster wanted Sekhar to tell him that he was great at what he was doing – that is what most people would have done. Nonetheless, Sekhar followed his one-day resolution and told him the truth. What was the consequence? The headmaster shortened the deadline for the papers’ correction.
